How to Clean a Diamond

Your hand doesn't sparkle like it used to, as your diamond ring just doesn't sparkle anymore. Or your earrings have lost their luster.

Even after a few days' wear, they can dull from lotions, body oil and everyday dust and dirt. Regular cleaning can keep your diamonds looking fresh and having that just-from-the-jeweler brilliance all the time.

It's time to clean those diamonds. Worried about how to do it. It simple really. Just follow these tips.

1.
Close the drain in the sink. This eliminates the worry of loosing the ring or earring down the drain by accident.
2.
Run some really hot water into the sink and then soak the ring or earring in it.
3.
If for some reason your jewelry has become over the top grimy, one extra step would be to soak it in rubbing alcohol or vodka for a few minutes to remove that initial greasy film. Then put it back into the hot water for 10 minutes before going to the next step.
4.
Fill a small dish, such as a dessert dish, with window cleaner.
5.
Take the jewelry from the hot water and put it into the dish containing the window cleaner. Allow the ring or earring soak for at least 10 minutes in the cleaning liquid.
6.
Dip an old toothbrush in window cleaner and scrub ring or earring thoroughly for several minutes.
7.
Refill the sink with hot water and soak the ring or earring for a few minutes longer.
8.
Continue scrubbing with the toothbrush, now under a flow of hot water. I still recommend having the sink drain in place.
9.
Rinse well under hot water.
10.
Repeat, if necessary, until you achieve a brilliant shine
11.
After the final rinse, polish and dry the jewelry piece with a smooth, lint-free cloth or chamois.
12.
Enjoy the sparkle of your diamond!

A Few Final Tips

Use the hottest water you can stand - wear rubber gloves to avoid burning your hands.
Make sure to have your ring's prongs examined regularly. Sometimes toothbrush bristles can loosen the prongs a bit.
Some folks simply use dishwashing liquid instead of the window cleaner, but I've found the window cleaner to give the brightest sparkle back to my diamonds
